I spent about a month in South Sudan. During that time I had a lot of great experiences.
Here are some of my reflections.
Here are some of my reflections.
There is a huge opportunity for evangelism and Bible teaching. We did "hut to hut" evangelism in the local villages. Everyone was open to Bible teaching and often requested that we pray for them. We also encountered several people who claimed to be Christians, yet is was apparent that they did not really know what they believed.
If it's Simple, it works. In Africa, a "church" can be a weekly Bible teaching under a big tree. No building is required. Ministry opportunities abound with simple tools (like a big tree with shade) and a Bible.
FRM's chaplains have a heart for the lost. Many of the chaplains I spoke with are involved with other evangelism or ministries in addition to that of FRM or the South Sudanese army. Some of these ministries are inspiring.
FRM's chaplains are quick learners. I was told to have the chaplains put up and take down the tent 6 or 7 times (or until they knew how to do it). The second time they put it up perfectly. Very impressive!
I need to be with my family. Being separated for a month was difficult for me especially when my wife went through some struggles back home. I came to the conclusion that they need to be with me for projects that last for more than two weeks.
